YORUBA COUNCIL OF ELDERS REJECTS COUNCIL AUTONOMY

The Yoruba Council of Elders has praised the Forum of State Houses of Assembly for rejecting the local government autonomy proposed by the National Assembly.

In a statement by the Secretary-General of the body, Dr. Kunle Olajide, the group said the National Assembly erred with the proposal to grant autonomy to local governments in the country, stressing that if accepted, such autonomy would undermine the authority of the state over the councils.

The Yoruba Council of Elders also called on Nigerians to insist on restructuring of the geopolitical structure of the country in consonance with the tenets of federalism in order to ensure a stable, peaceful and progressive Nigeria.
